Issyk-Kul Tour: 7-Day Cultural Circuit

A week around Issyk-Kul: petroglyphs, Karakol, an eagle hunter, yurt makers, the Jeti-Oguz rocks and Skazka canyon, with nights in guesthouses and yurts.

Overview

This Issyk-Kul tour is an easy-paced week around one of the largest mountain lakes in the world, focused on the people who live on its shores. Issyk-Kul lies at about 1,600 m, never freezes and is ringed by the snow peaks of the Tian Shan. We travel the full loop: the north shore, the town of Karakol, and the quieter south shore with its red canyons.

What you see on the Issyk-Kul tour

  • Cholpon-Ata petroglyphs: an open-air field of boulders carved with ibex and hunting scenes, some more than 2,000 years old.
  • Karakol: the wooden Dungan mosque built without metal nails, the Holy Trinity cathedral and, on Sundays, the animal market.
  • Jeti-Oguz: the red sandstone cliffs known as the Seven Bulls and the Broken Heart rock.
  • Bokonbaev and Kyzyl-Tuu: an eagle hunter and his golden eagle, and a village of yurt makers who still build yurts by hand.
  • Skazka: the “fairy-tale” canyon of eroded clay towers close to the lake.

Who this tour suits

It is graded Easy. Walks are short and optional, the roads are mostly paved, and nights are in comfortable guesthouses plus two nights in a yurt camp by the lake. It is a good first trip to Kyrgyzstan, a good trip for families, and a relaxed way to see village life without long hikes.

Meeting local people

The heart of this Issyk-Kul tour is time with hosts: a Dungan family dinner in Karakol, a felt workshop in Kyzyl-Tuu where you can try making a small shyrdak pattern, and conversations with the families who run our yurt camp. These are working families and craftspeople, not staged shows.

Best season

May to October. July and August are warm enough to swim in the lake; May, June and September are quieter and greener. In October the mountains are often already white.

Extend your trip

The tour ends in Bishkek. Add three days on horseback with our Song-Kul horse trek, or a trek from Karakol on the Ala-Kul lake trek. Background reading: Issyk-Kul on Wikipedia.
