Issyk-Kul lake is one of the largest mountain lakes in the world, about 180 km long and lying at around 1,600 m between two ranges of the Tian Shan. It never freezes, its water is slightly salty and very clear, and it is the most visited region of Kyrgyzstan.
North shore and south shore
The north shore has the resort town of Cholpon-Ata, sandy beaches, hotels and an open-air field of ancient petroglyphs. The south shore is quieter and wilder: small villages, yurt camps, eagle hunters in Bokonbaev, the yurt makers of Kyzyl-Tuu and the clay towers of Skazka canyon. At the eastern end lies Karakol, the base for treks into the mountains.
Best time to visit Issyk-Kul
Swimming season is from late June to early September, when the water is cool but pleasant. May, June and September are quieter and good for walking and photography. In winter the lake stays open water and the mountains around it are white.
Getting there
The north shore is about four hours by road from Bishkek. Issyk-Kul airport near Cholpon-Ata has seasonal flights. A full loop around the lake is about 440 km.
